Record Breaking Numbers

With 2.3 million residents (a number estimated to continue increasing), more than 145 different languages being spoken, and land that stretches over 655 square miles in size, the city of Houston is no stranger to big numbers. Recently the city claimed a new high number: a record number of passengers traveling through Houston airports.

On February 6, 2019, the Houston Airport system published a press release in which it reported that between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, a record 58 million passengers traveled through the city in the year 2018.

According to Mayor Sylvester Turner, “Houston’s top-rated airports are a vital part of the economic engine driving our city’s growth and expanding global profile. They reflect our city’s talent, cultural diversity, and plentiful assets, and build on our image as a world leader.”

The exact number was of total passengers at Bush and Hobby airports was 58,284,008 with both registering the highest numbers they have ever seen. This number is about 7.6 percent higher than it was in 2017 in which the record for a number of passengers was set at 46,520,710.

Bush Airport contributed 43,807,539 passengers to this record-breaking total (a 7.6 percent increase over 2017), and Hobby Airport served 14,476,469 passengers in 2018, (a 7.7 percent increase over 2017). This was also Hobby’s first time topping the 14 million passenger mark.
