Pet Preparation
Before you are ready to embark on a journey with your pet it is important to acclimate them to the travel conditions they will soon experience. If your pet has not been on a long journey before you can start practicing with them by going on short drives and increase the duration of the drives incrementally. When you come to Key Airport we are also pet-friendly and although they cannot stay with us while you are gone, we will make sure to accommodate your furry friend during the Hobby Airport shuttle ride.
Carrier Comfort
Travel can be quite the endeavor for your pet, therefore it is important to make the travel experience as comfortable as possible for your pet. The first step to make sure the experience is as comfortable as possible would be to purchase the right pet carrier. When you purchase the crate it should have enough room for your pet to stand and turn around in with ease. Additionally, the carrier should be the International Air Transport Association certified (IATA) to avoid any potential challenges during airport travel.
Check Airline Pet Requirments
In addition to making sure your pet’s comfort is a priority, it is essential to make sure before confirming flight arrangements that you are informed on the pet travel protocol. Therefore, you should call the airline well in advance to make sure to understand what limits they have for the number of animals per flight cabin. Also, if there are special pet health and immunization requirements, it is important to confirm this prior to boarding.
Understand Travel Risks
While it is possible to travel with your pet it is important to understand potential risks associated with pet travel. The Humane Society advises that you weigh all risks prior to traveling with your pet. Animals with short snouts and pushed in faces can be vulnerable to oxygen deprivation and more susceptible to heatstroke. For example, animals that exemplify these traits would be bulldogs and Persian cats. Lastly, If you are unsure about other pet concerns it is advisable to get a veterinary check-up prior to travel.
